This is a common sight in Portage County, yet when I hear that familar "whoosh whoosh", I can't help but run out to see. I used to have the kids to point it out to - now I only have the dogs and they don't seem to much care. There is just something about all those bright colors floating in the air.

I remember the first time I heard that 'Whoosh, woosh' sound. We were living in Bettendorf Iowa and a hot air balloon landed in the church parking lot directly behind our house. I thought the Martians had landed. I too will always rush out to see them. It is an awsome sight to see a sky full of those colorful balloons.
P.S. Why is it a common sight in Portage County?
I don't really know why - it's just a popular activity here. One of the local communities even has a balloon fair in the fall. Maybe we have good wind currents?
I think there is just a lot of hot air in the northern portion of the state
We have a big group of people out here who get into it. One of our tutors a few years ago crewed with one group, so on a Saturday they brought there balloon over and let anyone who wanted to take a ride about 25-50 feet off the ground. They kept it tethered for liability reason, but it was still fun
